Bulldogs Take Season Opener

Bulldogs Take Season Opener

Jan. 10, 2009

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Despite fighting a bevy of injuries and illnesses, Yale's gymnastics team won their season opener, a six-way meet at MIT. The final team score was 182.8. Team captain Alina Liao led the way, winning bars, beam, and floor, as well as the all-around competition.

The team started on the uneven bars, afraid that they were unable to put up a full line-up. However, freshmen Margaret Greenberg and Claude De Jocas stepped up so that Yale had five routines. Liao shone, winning the event with a 9.7. Allison Mak and Sarah Hughes, who both made occasional bars appearances last year, scored 8.7 and 8.85 respectively.

Beam has been the team's best event in the past few years, and it appears that this season will continue the trend. The Bulldogs swept the medal stand with Liao's 9.825 in first place, followed by Mak and Lauren Tatsuno, who shared second with a pair of 9.775s.

Floor was another solid event for Yale. Liao tied for first place with a 9.7, with the rest of her teammates closely behind her. Brigitte Kivisto earned a 9.6 for third place, Tatsuno scored a 9.475, Sherry Yang a 9.3, and Hughes a 9.2.

On vault, Tatsuno and Liao delivered their typical nearly flawless runs, earning second (9.425) and third places (9.35). Micaline Tomeo and Yang made their collegiate vault debuts, with scores of 8.675 and 8.825, respectively. Mak scored an 8.85.

Liao won the all-around competition with a 38.575.

In the team competition, Ursinus earned second place with a 180.525, and Cortland placed third with a 177.625.

"I'm so proud of them," said Head Coach Barbara Tonry. "The girls did an outstanding job filling in the holes in the line-ups and it was a great start to the season."

Next weekend, Yale travels to Penn for their annual dual meet. Competition starts at 1pm.
