Yale Drops Home Opener to Bridgeport

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In their second meeting in as many weekends, Bridgeport overtook Yale, 186.900 to 184.125. The home team had the lead after the first rotation, but the visitors took over from there. Alina Liao won bars, floor, and the all-around, while Lauren Tatsuno grabbed the beam title.

The Bulldogs started on vault with a solid set of runs, the only event in which they didn't have to count any falls. Micaline Tomeo led off with a 9.075 on a tucked Tsukahara, and Sherry Yang followed with a 9.3 on her pike Yurchenko. The remaining women performed layout Yurchenkos. Tatsuno scored a 9.4. Liao earned a 9.45, tying for third place, and Allison Mak placed second with her 9.525.

Since each of the Bulldogs' bars routines counted towards the team score, they were forced to count three falls and a pause on the high bar. Liao, however, anchored the line-up with a beautiful routine and swung her way to a 9.8, which earned her first place.

Yale also had to count four falls on beam, which they have struggled on in the past few weeks. Yang started off with an 8.5. Liao added a 9.1. Besides falling on her acrobatic series, Mak had a solid routine that earned her a 9.2. Brigitte Kivisto nailed her routine for the fourth weekend in a row, scoring a 9.625 which put her in second place. Tatsuno finished off the event flawlessly, earning a 9.7.

On floor, Yale put up six routines, which allowed the team to drop one score. Mak opened up with an 8.925. Yang's routine, filled with skills to show off her flexibility, scored a 9.0. Sarah Hughes earned a 9.375, and Tatsuno ended her stellar day with a 9.675. Kivisto's powerful tumbling earned her a 9.775, which placed second. Liao closed out the meet in al dominating fashion, sticking all her tumbling passes. She scored a 9.825.

In the all-around competition, Mak's 35.9 placed third. Liao won the meet with a 38.175.

Next Saturday, Feb. 7, the Bulldogs head to Rutgers for a tri-meet with Pittsburgh. Competition starts at 12:00pm.
