COLLEGE PARK, Md. - At a quad meet hosted by Maryland, Yale placed fourth with a team score of 165.625. The rest of the field is either nationally ranked or one of the top teams in their respective conferences. Penn State won the competition with a 196.125, followed by Arizona (195.300) and Maryland (194.175).

On vault, the Bulldogs were led by Brigitte Kivisto's 9.725. Competing a new vault, a front handspring with a double twist, she placed 14th, but her score was less than two tenths away from first place. Allison Mak scored a 9.575, followed closely behind by Alina Liao's 9.55.

Yale struggled a little on bars. Liao swung her way to a 9.425, and Mak earned a 9.3. Hughes, who has been steadily improving on the event throughout the season, scored a 9.15.

Although the team was missing one routine on each of the next two events, the gymnasts who were in the line-up did an excellent job. On beam, Liao placed third with a 9.775, less than a tenth behind the winning score. Kivisto and Mak had a pair of 9.6's, and Hughes added an 8.95.

Floor was where the Bulldogs shone. Mak started off with a 9.375, followed by Hughes' 9.425. Then Kivisto turned in a crowd-pleasing routine for a 9.675, and Liao's effortless tumbling earned her a 9.75, which landed her in tenth place.

In the all-around competition, Penn State's Brandi Personett won with a 39.425. Liao's 38.5 placed seventh. Mak earned eighth place with a 37.85, and Hughes earned ninth place with a 36.125.

Next Saturday, Mar. 21, Yale plays host to the rest of the conference for the ECAC Championships. Competition starts at 1:00 p.m. in the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
