Coach's Corner: Gymnastics
Jan. 26, 2004
New Haven, CT - The gymnastic team has struggled through its first three competitions for good reason. The loss of six seniors resulted in a rebuilding year. That would have been challenge enough, but we then encountered injuries that we never have had so early in the season. Then the real challenge began.
Two of our 2002 and 2003 NCAA Qualifiers have not been able to completely return to the all-around due to surgeries. We have temporarily lost two of our promising freshmen due to ankle injuries. If that wasn't enough, we have also lost a very important junior all-around competitor after muscle pulls in her shoulder and neck. We hope she will be back in the lineup this week.
When the all our gymnasts are back and healthy, we will present a very strong team. With all considered, we did very well against a strong Ivy League opponent, University of Pennsylvania, this past weekend. We lost in total team scores by 1.4 points. Junior Kathryn Fong (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won the uneven parallel bars. Freshman Suchitra Paul (Orinda, Calif.) was the winner on balance beam, while senior Jamie Green (Los Angeles, Calif.) won the floor exercise.
We all are anxiously awaiting the return of most of our injured gymnasts which, we think, will be within the next few weeks. The rest of the year will be a challenge but one I think this team will be really up for.
