Seniors Star in 4-2 Comeback Win Over Princeton

The plan for the Yale women's ice hockey team heading into Saturday's Senior Day game at Ingalls Rink was to have all six active seniors start, and that was exactly what the Bulldogs did. But there was no way to plan what wound up happening after that -- a storybook ending that featured the Class of 2013 prominently. Trailing 2-0 midway through, the Bulldogs rallied to tie the game on a pair of goals by senior forwards Alyssa Zupon and Natalie Wedell. Then, after sophomore forward Lynn Kennedy gave Yale the lead in the third period and junior defenseman Tara Tomimoto added an empty netter, those seniors all were back together on the ice for the final shift. Senior goalie Erin Callahan was at the center of the celebration of the 4-2 victory, as she made 34 saves in her second start of the season.

The Yale women’s ice hockey team saw its chance for an ECAC Hockey playoff spot come to an end Friday night, as a 4-0 loss to Quinnipiac at Ingalls Rink combined with Princeton’s 2-1 win at Brown eliminated the Bulldogs from playoff contention. The Bulldogs also had their streak of 31 straight successful penalty kills brought to an end. Sophomore goalie Jaimie Leonoff did all she could to keep her team in the game, finishing with 48 saves, but a 52-12 shot advantage for the Bobcats proved to be too much to overcome. Four different players scored for Quinnipiac.

Visit to Princeton, Quinnipiac Could Help Solidify Playoff Spot

With a 2-0 win over Colgate last Saturday in the annual “White Out for Mandi”, the Yale women’s ice hockey team lifted itself into the last available spot for the ECAC Hockey playoffs. With four weekends to go, though, the Bulldogs still have plenty of work to do. In addition to being tied for eighth with Colgate (Yale holds the tiebreaker on the Raiders), the Bulldogs’ lead over the two teams tied for 10th (Brown and Princeton) is just one point. And six points separate them from seventh-place RPI. That all adds to the intensity as Yale hits the road for four conference games over the next two weekends, starting with visits to Princeton (Friday, 7:00 p.m.) and Quinnipiac (Saturday, 4:00 p.m.) this weekend.

A White Out -- and a Shut Out -- for Mandi as Yale Beats Colgate 2-0

Hundreds of hockey fans headed to Ingalls Rink Saturday afternoon to support a great cause. They wound up getting to see a great game as well. The Yale women’s ice hockey team held its third annual “White Out for Mandi” fundraiser game for the Mandi Schwartz Foundation, founded in memory of center Mandi Schwartz ’10 (1988-2011), and the day was made even more special by the presence of Mandi’s parents, Carol and Rick. But the action on the ice had an importance of its own, as the Bulldogs wound up pulling into a tie for ECAC Hockey’s eighth and final conference playoff spot with four weeks to go by blanking Colgate 2-0. Sophomore goalie Jaimie Leonoff made 31 saves, while freshman forward Jamie Haddad and senior forward Alyssa Zupon scored Yale’s goals.

The first time the Yale women’s ice hockey team played No. 4 Cornell this year, the Big Red had to fend off an upset bid with a third-period goal for a 3-2 win. Friday night’s rematch was not as close. Three first-period goals, including a pair by defensemen Cassandra Poudrier, enabled the Big Red to eliminate any chance of late-game drama. Cornell eventually finished with a 5-0 win. Sophomore goalie Jaimie Leonoff made 36 saves.
