Lynn Kennedy, Martini Score Yale Goals
HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomore goaltender Jaimie Leonoff made 45 saves for the Yale women's ice hockey team, her fifth game this season with 40 or more saves, but it was not enough to deny Dartmouth Tuesday night at Thompson Arena. The Big Green outshot the Bulldogs 49-17 to come away with a 4-2 win. Sophomore forward Lynn Kennedy and freshman defenseman Kate Martini scored Yale's goals.
The game had originally been scheduled for last Saturday, but was postponed due to the blizzard that blanketed the Northeast with snow over the weekend. Yale's game at Harvard last Friday was also postponed, so it wound up being nine days without a game for the Bulldogs since they tied Quinnipiac 2-2 on Feb. 2. But despite the long layoff Yale took the lead 5:40 into the game on Kennedy's goal, her first of the season after missing most of the year due to injury. Freshman forward Hanna Åström and junior defenseman Tara Tomimoto assisted on the play.
Dartmouth (14-7-4, 9-6-3 ECAC Hockey) finished killing off its first penalty of the game as the second period began, then went to work on taking the lead. The Big Green peppered Leonoff with 16 shots for the period, tying the game 54 seconds into the second shortly after Leonoff had denied a short-handed chance. Forward Ailish Forfar's goal made it 1-1, and the score stayed that way through another Yale penalty midway through the period.
Later in the period, shortly after Leonoff had made a nice save on forward Reagan Fischer, the Bulldogs nearly caught Dartmouth in transition. Senior forward Alyssa Zupon's pass found senior forward Danielle Moncion heading towards the far post, but Moncion could not control the puck enough to get a solid shot off.
That missed opportunity proved even more painful when Dartmouth caught Yale in transition 30 seconds later. Defenseman Zoe Brennan's pass led forward Lindsey Allen perfectly as Allen headed into the Yale zone. With a stride on two Yale defenders, Allen was able to backhand one past Leonoff at 15:14 to make it 2-1 Dartmouth.
Big Green goalie Lindsay Holdcroft kicked aside a shot by junior forward Ashley Dunbar in the final minutes of the period, and Dartmouth kept the lead into the second intermission.
Yale (4-18-2, 3-12-2 ECAC Hockey) killed off another penalty early in the third, as the Bulldog penalty kill extended its streak to 23 successful kills. But at 5:37, Big Green forward Camille Dumais ripped one past Leonoff from the left circle to make it 3-1.
The Bulldogs got their second power play of the game with 3:43 left, and pulled Leonoff as well to get six skaters on the ice. That paid dividends when freshman forward Jamie Haddad and Tomimoto set up Martini for a slap shot from the point that beat Dartmouth goalie Lindsay Holdcroft high on her stick side with 3:03 left.
But with 45.6 seconds left and Leonoff still pulled, Dartmouth forward Jessica Gagner found the empty net from the neutral zone to make the final 4-2.
Leonoff finished five saves shy of her season high, 50 saves against Boston College in the Nutmeg Classic championship game Nov. 24.
