Scrimmage Win for Yale vs. Sacred Heart, 6-0
Kennedy Scores Twice
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's ice hockey completed its 2013-14 preseason preparation Friday night at Ingalls Rink, beating Sacred Heart 6-0 in a scrimmage. The Bulldogs outshot the Pioneers 54-9.
Freshman goalie Hanna Mandl got the start and needed to make just one save to keep the Pioneers scoreless in the first. She would have had to make another were it not for some great back checking from senior defenseman Tara Tomimoto, who broke up what looked like a breakaway for Sacred Heart midway through the period.
Pioneers goalie Alexius Schutt stopped all 14 Yale shots she faced in the first, though, and the teams skated into the first intermission scoreless.
Yale finally scored on its 24th shot of the game, a goal by junior forward Lynn Kennedy at 9:11 of the second. Sophomore forward Jamie Haddad got the puck out of Yale's zone and off the boards to Kennedy, who took it into the SHU zone and fired in a shot from the right circle.
Sophomore goalie Rachelle Graham came on to play the second period, making a nice stop on a shot by forward Sara Hanna off a feed from forward Alex Davis during a 2-on-1 with less than four minutes to play in the period. Right after that, Kennedy scored again, this time with assists from Haddad and sophomore forward Hanna Åström. Senior forward Paige Decker added the third and final goal of the period, assisted by Tomimoto and sophomore defenseman Kate Martini, with 14 seconds left.
Åström increased the lead to 4-0, burying a feed from freshman forward Krista Yip-Chuck with 13:13 left in the game. Senior defenseman Aurora Kennedy also assisted on the play. Goals by sophomore forward Janelle Ferrara, off a long pass by Tomimoto, and junior forward Stephanie Mock, assisted by freshman forward Phoebe Staenz, in the final two minutes capped the scoring.
Graham finished with eight saves in her two periods of work. Schutt made 48 stops.
Yale opens the regular season Saturday afternoon at No. 2 Boston College.
