Bulldogs Fall at No. 5 Clarkson
POTSDAM, N.Y. – No. 5 Clarkson got goals from seven different players, including a pair on the power play, to top the Yale women's ice hockey team 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena. Clarkson's Erica Howe made 22 saves for the shutout, with five of those shots coming from Yale freshman forward Phoebe Staenz.
Clarkson (7-2-2, 2-1-1 ECAC Hockey), which now has three shutouts in its last seven games, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from forwards Cayley Mercer and Shelby Nisbet in a span of 34 seconds. Mercer's came on a power play.
The Golden Knights broke the game open with four goals in the second period, from forward Brittany Styner, forward Jamie Lee Rattray, defenseman Corie Jacobson and forward Genevieve Bannon.
Freshman Hanna Mandl came on to play goal for Yale in the third period, relieving junior Jaimie Leonoff (27 saves). Mandl stopped four of the five shots she saw, allowing just one goal to forward Carly Mercer.
Yale finished 0-for-3 on the power play. After getting outshot 33-12 in the first two periods, the Bulldogs had a 10-5 shot advantage in the third period.
Yale (0-4-0, 0-2-0 ECAC Hockey) plays its home opener on Friday vs. Princeton.
