Two Goals Each for Haddad, Martini in 6-4 Win at Union
Unbeaten Streak at Three
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Yale women's ice hockey team finished off a four-point weekend in ECAC Hockey play with a 6-4 win at Union Saturday afternoon. Sophomore forward Jamie Haddad and sophomore defenseman Kate Martini each scored a pair of goals as the Bulldogs extended their unbeaten streak to three games. This was Yale's first four-point road trip in ECAC Hockey play since Jan. 11-12 of 2008. It was also the most goals in a game for the Bulldogs since a 10-1 win over Sacred Heart on Nov. 27, 2009.
Sophomore forward Janelle Ferrara opened the scoring, assisted by freshman defenseman Taylor Marchin and Haddad at 5:40 of the first. Union tied the game 10 minutes later on a power play goal by forward Jessica Kaminsky.
After Union (5-9-0, 2-4-0 ECAC Hockey) went ahead 2-1 at 6:25 of the second on a goal by defenseman Alex Tancrell-Fontaine, Yale took control of the game. Sophomore forward Hanna Åström started a run of four straight Bulldog goals by scoring just 13 seconds after the Union goal. Power play goals later in the period from Haddad (assisted by freshman forward Phoebe Staenz and senior defenseman Tara Tomimoto) and Martini (assisted by senior defenseman Aurora Kennedy and junior forward Stephanie Mock) gave Yale a 4-2 lead heading into the third period, and Martini extended the lead to 5-2 with a power play goal at 2:08 of the third. Kennedy and Åström assisted on that one.
Union closed to within 5-4 on power play goals by Kaminsky in a span of 66 seconds early in the third. But Haddad's empty-netter in the final minute, assisted by Staenz, put the game out of reach.
Yale (2-5-1, 2-3-1 ECAC hockey) got 17 saves from junior goaltender Jaimie Leonoff. The Bulldogs host No. 1 Minnesota for a pair of games next weekend.
