Staenz Earns ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week Award
Freshman Honored for Performance at Nutmeg Classic
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman forward Phoebe Staenz (Zurich, Switzerland) was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. The honor comes after Staenz totaled five points (2-3-5) this past weekend in the tenth annual Nutmeg Classic.
Staenz, who was named to the all-tournament team at the Nutmeg Classic for her efforts, assisted on the game-winning goal by freshman defenseman Taylor Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) in the final minute of the win vs. UConn on Friday. She had one goal and two assists in that game, then added another goal and another assist Saturday in a 3-2 loss to No. 8 Quinnipiac in the championship game.
Staenz has 10 points (2-8-10) in the six games since she returned from playing for Team Switzerland at the Smile Japan Bridgestone Blizzak Challenge in Tokyo. She has taken over the team lead in assists and points (3-9-12). With 51 shots so far, she is a major reason why Yale has increased its average shots on goal per game by 24 percent compared to last season (from 19.5 to 24.2).
The weekly awards for ECAC Hockey are determined by a vote of the league's coaches.
Yale plays at Providence this Friday at 7:00 p.m.
