Duo Helped Bulldogs to Ties with No. 5/6 Clarkson, St. Lawrence
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior goaltender Jaimie Leonoff (Montréal, Qué.) and freshman forward Phoebe Staenz (Zürich, Switzerland) were honored by ECAC Hockey on Tuesday for their roles in Yale's ties with No. 5/6 Clarkson and St. Lawrence this past weekend. Leonoff was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week and Staenz was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week.
On Friday night against Clarkson, Leonoff made 52 saves -- the most she has made in a game since she stopped 63 at Mercyhurst Nov. 19, 2011. Staenz scored the game-tying goal with less than 10 minutes to play, and also assisted on a short-handed goal earlier in the game, as the Bulldogs came away with a 3-3 overtime tie.
On Saturday afternoon against St. Lawrence, Leonoff added 30 more saves -- including a dramatic glove save on a Saints shot just before time expired at the end of overtime. That sealed the 1-1 tie. Staenz assisted on the game-tying goal with seven minutes to play in regulation.
Leonoff has stopped 111 of 115 shots in the last three games (.965) and posted a 1.26 goals-against average in that span. She has a .925 save percentage this season, which would place her sixth on Yale's single-season list -- 16 points away from the school single-season record (.941, Jackee Snikeris '11 in 2010-11).
Staenz leads Yale in goals (8), assists (12) and points (20). She has at least one point in nine of the last 11 games she has played. She is 12th in the nation in assists per game and points per game, and second in the nation in points per game among rookies.
This was the fifth award of the season from ECAC Hockey for Staenz, who has been selected to play for Switzerland at the upcoming Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She was ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for December and has now earned four weekly honors.
The weekly ECAC Hockey awards are determined by a vote of the league's coaches.
Yale hosts Brown this Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Ingalls Rink. The game is the team's annual "White Out for Mandi" in memory of Mandi Schwartz '10 (1988-2011), and will feature a special appearance by Mandi's brother Jaden Schwartz and the NHL's St. Louis Blues.

- ECAC Hockey Player of the Week 12/10
