No. 8 Saints Edge Bulldogs 4-3
Jan. 8, 2005
Canton, N.Y. - Christin Powers' goal with 7:22 to play proved decisive as No. 8 St. Lawrence beat Yale 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena. The loss snapped Yale's string of six straight conference victories and dropped the Bulldogs into a three-way tie with Dartmouth and Harvard for first place in the ECACHL with 16 points.
The Bulldogs (10-8-0, 8-3-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. After a face-off win by Deena Caplette, Kristin Savard wristed in a rebound of a Helen Resor shot midway through the period. The Bulldogs got on the board again when Jenna Spring scored off assists from Erin Duggan and Kelsey Johnson just 1:32 before the first intermission.
The Saints responded emphatically in the second period, outshooting Yale 12-3 and getting three goals in a span of less than four minutes to take the lead. Rebecca Russell scored the first two at even strength, and Laurie Ross' power-play tally with four minutes left in the period gave St. Lawrence (14-3-3, 4-1-1) the lead.
An interference penalty on St. Lawrence' Kate Michael 7:35 into the third ended a brief Saints power play, and when Christina Sharun got out of the box Yale went on the power play at 8:21. Seven seconds later St. Lawrence' Tracy Muzerall went off for interference, and while the Saints were able to deny Yale on the 5-on-3 the Bulldogs finally broke through skating 5-on-4. Savard lifted the puck over Jess Moffat (23 saves) from the high slot to tie the game, assisted by Jenna Spring.
The 3-3 tie lasted only 2:31, however, as Powers intercepted a pass and took it in all alone on goaltender Sarah Love (22 saves), beating her to the far post.
Yale remains winless (0-19-1) in 20 games all-time against St. Lawrence, though three of the last four meetings have been decided by one goal. The Bulldogs make their first-ever trip to Ohio State for a pair of games next weekend. After an off weekend, they resume ECACHL play Jan. 28 at Brown.
