Ohio State Edges Yale in OT, 5-4
Jan. 14, 2005
Columbus, Ohio - Katie Maroney's goal with 39 seconds left in overtime gave Ohio State a 5-4 win over Yale Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. The Bulldogs fought back from being down 4-2 with two third-period goals, including the game-tying goal with just 22 seconds left in regulation from Kristin Savard. But OSU (11-9-1, 9-9-0 WCHA) outshot Yale (10-9-0, 8-3-0 ECACHL) 9-1 in overtime and eventually got one past Yale goalie Sarah Love (35 saves). Yale's Erin Duggan and OSU's Jana Harrigan both had hat tricks in the game.
OSU got the only goal of the first period, a Harrigan tally at 11:11. The second period was a back-and-forth affair in which the two teams combined for 28 shots. Duggan tied the game at 4:27, assisted by Kelsey Johnson and Jenna Spring. Harrigan scored on a power play to re-take the lead at 10:49, but Duggan answered just over three minutes later with her own power-play goal off assists from Spring and Helen Resor. Just 51 seconds after that Harrigan got her hat trick, and Crystal Sather's goal at 17:35 - the first by a player other than Duggan or Harrigan - gave OSU a two-goal cushion.
Duggan completed her second hat trick of the season five minutes into the third period on the power play, assisted by Johnson and Christina Sharun. Duggan and Resor both had assists on Savard's game-tying goal, which came with Love pulled. That goal forced Yale's second overtime in three games. The Bulldogs pulled out a 2-1 win at Clarkson last Friday, but had the tables turned on them this time with Maroney's game-winner. OSU goaltender Erika Vanderveer finished with 35 saves.
Yale and Ohio State play again Saturday at 4:00.
