No. 9 Clarkson Edges Yale 1-0
Jan. 14, 2006
POTSDAM, N.Y. - A power-play goal by Ashley Shaidle in the second period gave No. 9 Clarkson a 1-0 win over Yale Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena. The Bulldogs were shut out by goaltender Kira Hurley (19 saves), who overshadowed a 30-save effort from Yale's Sarah Love. Hurley now has an NCAA-best eight shutouts.
Clarkson (15-7-1, 7-3-0 ECACHL) was coming off an impressive showing the night before, holding Brown to just six shots for the entire game. The Bulldogs (5-9-3, 2-4-2 ECACHL) nearly doubled that figure in the first period alone, but Hurley stopped all 10 shots.
The game turned on a tripping penalty against the Bulldogs early in the second, which led to Shaidle's tally at 5:08. That was her team-leading 10th of the season.
The Clarkson defense stiffened as the game wore on, limiting Yale to just nine shots over the final two periods. The Golden Knights have now held five of their last six opponents to fewer than 20 shots for the game.
Yale pulled Love with 1:24 to play, but Hurley made a save on a Crysti Howser shot and the Knights won the ensuing faceoff to eliminate any Yale threat.
The Bulldogs resume play Tues. Jan. 24 against Brown at Ingalls Rink.
