Trip West Will Put Hot Streak to Test
Jan. 17, 2008
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale heads west for games at No. 6 Mercyhurst (Friday, 7:00 p.m.) and Niagara (Saturday, 7:00 p.m.) looking to keep the momentum of its recent 4-1-2 stretch going. To do so the Bulldogs will have to contain two players currently in the top six in the country in goals.
Yale (7-6-4, 5-5-2 ECAC Hockey, t-5th) is coming off a weekend sweep of ECAC Hockey foes Princeton and Quinnipiac. The Bulldogs racked up 10 goals in the two games, scoring five goals in back-to-back games for the first time in a year. Yale's seven game-winning goals have come from seven different players, with sophomore forward Caroline Murphy (Woodstock, Conn.) getting one on Friday at Princeton and junior forward Sarah Tittman (Chilton, Wisc.) getting one Saturday at Quinnipiac. Yale's goaltending duo of freshman Jackee Snikeris (Downingtown, Pa.) and senior Shivon Zilis (Markham, Ont.) has stopped 196 of 211 shots (.929) during the seven-game streak.
Mercyhurst (15-5-2, 4-0-0 CHA, 1st) features one of college hockey's most dynamic players in forward Meghan Agosta, a Canadian National Team member who is third in the NCAA in goals and fifth in scoring (25-18-43 in 22 games). Goalie Laura Hosier is 13th in the country in save percentage (.920). The Lakers' one weakness might be a tendency to take penalties -- they average an NCAA-high 15.5 penalty minutes per game -- but the Yale power play unit must stay disciplined. Agosta has five short-handed goals.
Niagara (6-10-4, 0-2-0 CHA, 1-2nd) battled Yale to a 4-4 tie earlier this season in the first round of the Nutmeg Classic. After a scoreless overtime a shootout was held and a goal by freshman forward Bray Ketchum (Greenwich, Conn.) propelled Yale to the title game. The Bulldogs hope to do a better job containing forward Ashley Riggs this time around. She had three of her team-leading 16 goals, and 10 shots on goal, as the Purple Eagles outshot Yale 35-21. Riggs is tied for sixth in the country in goals.
