NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman defenseman Samantha MacLean (Mississauga, Ont.) scored one of the biggest goals of Yale's season on Saturday, and on Monday that earned her ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week honors.
MacLean scored the game-winning goal at 2:05 of the third period to lead Yale to a 3-2 win over RPI Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale. With the win, the Bulldogs clinched a spot in the ECAC Hockey playoffs for the seventh straight season. Had RPI won, the Bulldogs would have been eliminated.
Yale trailed 1-0 before taking the lead on goals by junior forward Sarah Tittman (Chilton, Wisc.) and sophomore defenseman Alyssa Clarke (Donkin, N.S.) in the second period. MacLean's goal, which came off a faceoff won by junior forward Danielle Kozlowski (Melrose, Mass.), made the score 3-1. RPI closed to within 3-2 on a goal by Laura Gersten at the 11:31 mark but would get no closer.
That was MacLean's second goal of the season. She also has six assists.
MacLean is the third different Bulldog to earn Rookie of the Week. Freshman forward Bray Ketchum (Greenwich, Conn.) has won the award three times and freshman goaltender Jackee Snikeris (Downingtown, Pa.) has won it once.
MacLean attended Holy Name of Mary Secondary School and played for the NWHL's Oakville Ice.
Yale, the No. 7 seed in the ECAC Hockey playoffs, travels to No. 2 seed St. Lawrence for a best-of-three quarterfinal series Feb. 29-Mar. 2.
