No. 10 Bulldogs Start Season with Nutmeg Classic
Oct. 27, 2005
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale Bulldogs are looking to make their mark on the national women's hockey scene this year, but first they are going to have to think local. The regular season starts with the Nutmeg Classic, which features Yale hosting Quinnipiac on Friday and traveling to Storrs to play UConn on Saturday. The 7 p.m. matchup with the Bobcats at Ingalls Rink has the added significance of being an ECACHL game - Quinnipiac's first as a member of the conference.
Yale had to overcome a 2-0 deficit to beat the Bobcats (1-3-1) in the season opener last year in North Branford, and the player who accounted for three of Yale's goals in the 4-2 win that night - Erin Duggan - has graduated. This time around, the Bulldogs will likely rely on their top line of Deena Caplette, Kristin Savard (who had an empty-netter to seal last year's game) and Sheila Zingler. That trio ended the year on a high note, combining for 10 goals and 10 assists in the final seven games. Quinnipiac's top scorer is freshman Hayley McMeekin (4-2-6). Live stats for the game will be available via GameTracker on yalebulldogs.com and Quinnipiac will broadcast the game on quinnipiacbobcats.com.
The Huskies (1-2-0) claimed the inaugural Nutmeg Classic last season with a 2-1 win over the Bulldogs, scoring the game-winning goal with only 39 seconds left. That goal came from Jennifer Houlden, but the Huskies' main offensive threat is Jaclyn Hawkins. She led the team in scoring (25-14-39) as a freshman last year, and has three goals in the first three games this season.
Following Saturday's game, three Bulldogs will turn their attention to playing for another team: the ECACHL All-Stars. Caplette, Savard and goaltender Sarah Love will all be a part of the team that takes on Team USA (featuring Yale sophomore Helen Resor) Tuesday night at Ingalls Rink (7:30, broadcast on Cn8). For ticket information, please call 203-432-1400. Yale students will be admitted free with ID.
The Nutmeg Classic concludes Sunday with UConn hosting Quinnipiac.
