First Meeting Ever for Yale and Quinnipiac Wednesday Afternoon
Bulldogs Seeking First Win
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Local rivals Yale and Quinnipiac meet for the first time in women's lacrosse this Wednesday, as the Bulldogs visit the Bobcats at 3:00 p.m.
Yale (0-1, 0-0 Ivy League) dropped the season opener at Holy Cross last Saturday, 16-13. Junior attacker Jen DeVito (Wading River, N.Y.) led the Bulldogs with four goals and five points, scoring on four of the five shots she took. Senior attacker Devon Rhodes (E. Northport, N.Y.) added three goals.
In addition to the multiple-goal outings from DeVito and Rhodes, Yale also got a pair of goals from sophomore midfielder Erin Magnuson (Northport, N.Y.) Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Christina Doherty (Bernardsville, N.J.), sophomore attacker Kerri Fleishhacker (Manhasset, N.Y.), junior midfielder Courteney Rutter (Summit, N.J.) and freshman midfielder Kelly Anne Sherlock (Huntington, N.Y.) also scored. Doherty added four draw controls and three ground balls.
Junior goalkeeper Erin McMullan (Wading River, N.Y.) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers to go along with her six saves.
DeVito (12-9-21), Fleishhacker (17-5-22) and Rhodes (21-6-27) are three of the five Bulldogs who are coming off double-digit point seasons. The others are sophomore midfielder Cathryn Avallone (Manhasset, N.Y.) (16-6-22) and junior defender Ashley McCormick (Paoli, Pa.) (9-3-12).
Tuesday's game is the season opener for Quinnipiac, which went 8-8 last season (7-2 in the NEC). The Bobcats were picked for second in the preseason NEC coaches' poll, trailing only Monmouth. Attacker Sarah Allen, a first team All-NEC selection last year, led the NCAA in assists with 64, setting an NCAA record with 4.27 assists per game. With 110 assists for her career, Allen needs one more to tie the Quinnipiac career record. The Bobcats also feature the 2012 NEC Rookie of the Year in five-foot-11 attacker Kyra Ochwat, who finished second on the team in goals with 32.
Quinnipiac's defense led the NEC in caused turnovers last year, and a pair of players who had 18 CTs return: defender/midfielder Chelsea Guerrera and defender Kelsey Maroney. Goalie Samantha Tilts had a .452 save percentage and a 10.92 goals-against average.
