Road Trips Take Yale to Rhode Island and Long Island This Week
Bulldogs Visit Bryant, Hofstra
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's lacrosse team plays four of its next five games on the road, and that stretch starts this week with trips to Rhode Island and Long Island. Yale plays another team known as the Bulldogs, Bryant, on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. and then travels to Hofstra for a 1:00 p.m. game Saturday vs. the Pride.
Yale (1-2, 0-1 Ivy League) lost to No. 12 Dartmouth 10-6 this past Saturday at Reese Stadium. This week the Bulldogs will look to regain the form that they showed earlier last week at Quinnipiac, as their 19 goals in the 19-12 win over the Bobcats were the most Yale has scored in a game in five years.
Senior attacker Devon Rhodes (E. Northport, N.Y.) leads the Bulldogs in goals and points (11-3-14). She has had at least three points in every game this year. Rhodes is already more than halfway to her goal total from last season (21), and if she keeps up her torrid pace she would be the first Bulldog to score more than 50 goals in a season since Lauren Taylor '08 scored 65 in 2007.
Junior attacker Jen DeVito (Wading River, N.Y.) is second on the team in goals and points (7-4-11). She needs just eight more goals to tie her season high, and with a shooting percentage of .700 she is the Bulldogs' most accurate shooter.
DeVito is also tied for the team lead in ground balls with six. The other Bulldogs with six ground balls are sophomore midfielder Christina Doherty (Bernardsville, N.J.), who has a team-high 10 draw controls, and junior goalkeeper Erin McMullan (Wading River, N.Y.). McMullan has a .397 save percentage and a 12.67 goals-against average.
The Bulldogs had been 23-for-26 (.884) on clears in their first two games, but were limited to an 11-for-19 (.579) performance against Dartmouth.
Yale beat Bryant 11-10 last year at Reese Stadium, getting the game-winning goal from Doherty with 4:30 to play. Yale had a big edge in draw controls (15-8) thanks to four from Doherty and four from sophomore midfielder Cathryn Avallone (Manhasset, N.Y.).
Bryant (1-2, 0-0 NEC), which is in its fifth season at the Division I level and first season of full postseason eligibility, has a new head coach in Jill DePetris. DePetris is familiar with Yale, having spent the past three seasons in the Ivy League as an assistant coach at Brown. Bryant opened with an 8-7 loss to Holy Cross, then followed up with a 15-12 win over Siena and a 15-4 loss at Albany. Midfielder Kimberley Sniffen leads the team in goals and points (7-1-8), scoring on seven of her 10 shots. Defender Lindsay Langella leads the team in ground balls with six, while midfielder Lisa Vendel leads in draw controls with eight. Brianna Watt has a .470 save percentage and an 11.67 goals-against average.
Hofstra (4-1, 0-0 CAA) suffered its first loss of the season this past Sunday, 16-11 at No. 1 Maryland. The Pride had opened the year with a school record four straight wins -- three by two or fewer goals -- to earn a spot among the teams receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse poll. Attacker Brittain Altomare leads the Pride in goals, assists and points (11-11-22). Midfielder Jill Maier (17) and defender April Iannetta (16) have combined for 33 of the team's 57 draw controls. Iannetta, a CAA all-rookie team selection last year along with Altomare, has a team-best 11 caused turnovers. Defender Shelby Milne, a high school All-American last year, leads the team in ground balls with 12. Kelsey Gregerson has a .413 save percentage and a 10.59 goals-against average.
This will be the first meeting in 10 years between Yale and Hofstra; the Bulldogs have won 18 of 19 in the series. This is one of two trips to Long Island for Yale this year, as the Bulldogs will also play Columbia in a special game at Oceanside High School on Saturday Apr. 13. Thirteen of the 29 players on Yale's roster are from New York.
