Bulldogs Seek to Clinch Winning Record

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's lacrosse team plays its final home game of 2013 Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. as Boston University comes to Reese Stadium. With a win, the Bulldogs would clinch a winning record for the season.

Yale (7-6, 1-5 Ivy League) fell to No. 20 Cornell 13-7 on Saturday, ending the Bulldogs' hopes of a spot in the Ivy League tournament. Six different players scored goals for Yale, including a pair by sophomore midfielder Cathryn Avallone (Manhasset, N.Y.), but the Bulldogs were hurt by a 7-for-29 shooting performance.

With 144 goals for the season, Yale has already bested its total from all of last season. The Bulldogs are on pace for 166 goals, which would be their most since 2008 (170). Their .427 shooting percentage would be the team's best since 2002 (.467). They also have a .799 clear percentage, which would be their best since 2008.

Senior attacker Devon Rhodes (E. Northport, N.Y.) (five games) and freshman midfielder Nicole Daniggelis (St. James, N.Y.) (11 games) both extended their point-scoring streaks on Saturday. Those two are tied for the team lead in goals with 31. The last time Yale had two players with at least 30 goals was 2007 (Lauren Taylor '08 65, Jenn Warden '09 32).

Rhodes, Yale's captain, has career highs in goals, assists and points (31-14-45) this year, and is tied for third in the Ivy League in assists and fifth in points. She is 14th on Yale's career leader list with 95 goals, 15th on Yale's career leader list with 127 points and tied for 15th on Yale's career leader list with 32 assists.

Daniggelis has at least two draw controls in every game she has played, and has 40 draws in the last five games. She has already set the school single-season record in that category (67) and is 15 away from the Ivy League single-season record (82 by Dartmouth's Sarah Plumb last season).

With 12 ground balls for the year, Daniggelis is one of five Bulldogs to have achieved double digits in both draw controls and ground balls. The others are Avallone (10 draw controls, 16 ground balls), sophomore midfielder Christina Doherty (28 draw controls, 29 ground balls), sophomore midfielder Erin Magnuson (Northport, N.Y.) (13 draw controls, 14 ground balls) and junior defender Adrienne Tarver (Pikesville, Md.) (15 draw controls, 20 ground balls).

Junior goalkeeper Erin McMullan (Wading River, N.Y.) is third in the Ivy League in saves with 91. She has a .389 save percentage and an 11.00 goals-against average. McMullan made 10 saves in Yale's 13-8 loss at BU last season.

Yale had rallied to tie the game at BU 7-7 in the second half last year after trailing by as many as three goals in the first half. But the Terriers outscored the Bulldogs 6-1 in the final 13 minutes to pull away for the victory.

BU (5-8, 2-4 America East) is coming off an 18-11 loss at No. 10 Stony Brook Sunday night. The Terriers have now lost two in a row after posting back-to-back wins with 20 or more goals earlier this month (20-17 at Vermont Apr. 6, 21-12 vs. Binghamton Apr. 13). They are 1-1 against Ivy League teams, having fallen to Dartmouth 12-7 but beaten Harvard 12-11.

The Terrier attack features attacker Danielle Etrasco, a member of the U.S. Women's National Team who is currently No. 2 in the NCAA in goals per game (48 in 13 games, 3.69 per game). Etrasco also has 32 draw controls, and is one of four BU players with 20 or more draws.

The Terriers' ride has limited opponents to a .741 performance on clears this year. Etrasco leads the team with 19 caused turnovers, followed by midfielder Jill Horka (18). Goalkeeper Christina Sheridan has a .428 save percentage and a 12.34 goals-against average.
