  • Higgins Scores Four in Loss to No. 11 Princeton

    With No. 11 Princeton battling to stay at the top of the Ivy League standings, the Yale women’s lacrosse team was facing a tough opponent in the Tigers Saturday afternoon amidst the raindrops at Reese Stadium. Yale got a standout game from sophomore midfielder Sam Higgins -- four goals, a ground ball and a draw control -- but other than that Princeton kept Yale’s offense in check. The Tigers got goals from nine different players for a 19-4 win.

  • No. 1 BC Holds Off Bulldogs, 15-10

    The Yale women’s lacrosse team started and ended strong against No. 1 Boston College -- one of the country’s two remaining unbeaten teams -- Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. The Bulldogs were tied 3-3 with the Eagles after nearly 17 minutes at the start of the game, and they ended the game with a 7-2 run in the final 21 minutes. But in between those two stretches, BC put together a 10-0 run that ultimately made the difference. The Eagles came away with a 15-10 win.

    First-year attacker Olivia Penoyer (Manlius, N.Y.), who helped the Yale women’s lacrosse team to a pair of wins last week, has been named Ivy League Co-Offensive Player of the Week. The league announced the award on Monday.

  • Four Players Notch Hat Tricks, Nixon Gets Draws Record in 17-10 Win at Columbia

    The Yale women’s lacrosse team showcased its scoring depth Saturday at Columbia, as four different players had hat tricks to power the Bulldogs to a 17-10 win over the Lions. First-year attacker Olivia Penoyer led the way with an eight-point day (4-4-8), while sophomore midfielder Olivia Markert had four points (3-1-4). First-year midfielder Jill Gollob and senior attacker Addie Zinsner each had three goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Amelia Drake made 11 saves for the win.

    Fueled by a career-high five-goal performance from senior attacker Addie Zinsner, the Yale women’s lacrosse team kept its perfect record against local rival UConn intact Wednesday afternoon at Reese Stadium. The Bulldogs’ 17-11 win improved their record against the Huskies to 10-0.

    After fighting back from an early 6-1 deficit, the Yale women’s lacrosse team utilized a 4-0 run in the second half to get within two goals of Cornell Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. But the Bulldogs would get no closer, as the Big Red scored five of the game’s last six goals to pull away for an 18-12 win.

    A Towson team that has faced seven teams ranked in the top 22 got a scare from the Yale women’s lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium, as the Bulldogs put up 13 goals on the Tigers -- as many as or more than five of those ranked teams did. But in the end Towson had just enough offensive firepower to hang on for a 15-13 win.

    After a tightly contested first half that was capped by a goal from sophomore midfielder Olivia Markert pulling the Yale women’s lacrosse team within 5-4 at Harvard Sunday afternoon, the Bulldogs could not maintain their momentum in the second half. Harvard outscored Yale 9-1 in the first 15 minutes of the second, pulling away and going on to take an 18-8 win.

    Highlighted by another record-setting day from senior attacker Izzy Nixon, the Yale women’s lacrosse team beat Canisius 17-7 Sunday afternoon at Reese Stadium. Nixon got seven draw controls on the day, giving her 297 for her career -- breaking the mark of 295 set by Nicole Daniggelis ’16 and tied last weekend by Dartmouth’s Kathryn Giroux. The Bulldogs also got six-point games from first-year midfielder Jill Gollob (6-0-6), sophomore midfielder Sam Higgins (1-5-6) and first-year attacker Olivia Penoyer (4-2-6). Senior attacker Addie Zinsner added a hat trick.

    There were plenty of big numbers posted by the Yale women’s lacrosse team Thursday afternoon at Reese Stadium against Niagara -- starting with the score, a 17-10 win. Behind that result were several standout individual performances, including 18 draw controls from senior attacker Izzy Nixon (one shy of the Ivy League record), eight points from first-year attacker Olivia Penoyer (5-3-8) and an eight-caused turnover/eight-ground ball day from sophomore midfielder Sam Higgins.

    The Yale women’s lacrosse team posted a dominant 18-4 win vs. Hartford Tuesday night, highlighted by an Ivy League-record tying 19 draw controls from senior attacker Izzy Nixon. The Bulldogs outshot the Hawks 53-7 and got goals from 11 different players. First-year attacker Olivia Penoyer led the Yale attack with five points (3-2-5). Yale did not allow a Hartford goal until the 28:35 mark of the second half.

The team’s 18-7 win vs. local rival Quinnipiac was powered largely by first-years and sophomores, as those two classes accounted for 17 of the team’s 18 goals. First-year midfielder Jill Gollob led the way with five goals.

And as the Bulldogs seek to replace nine starters from last year’s team, they will certainly need some new names to emerge as impact players. A talented core of returnees led by senior attacker Izzy Nixon (Greenwich, Conn.) -- the team captain and holder of the school record for draw controls -- gives the team reason for optimism heading into its 44th varsity season.
