NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After fighting back from an early 6-1 deficit, the Yale women's lacrosse team utilized a 4-0 run in the second half to get within two goals of Cornell Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. But the Bulldogs would get no closer, as the Big Red scored five of the game's last six goals to pull away for an 18-12 win.

Yale (4-6, 0-4 Ivy League) had been undefeated at home this season, but the early deficit proved too hard to overcome on Saturday. First year attacker Olivia Penoyer scored Yale's lone goal in the first 14:29. A goal by sophomore midfielder Sam Higgins then sparked a 4-2 Bulldog run that included another goal by Higgins and two more by Penoyer.

Penoyer would add a fourth before the end of the half, but Cornell tacked on three goals in the final 4:31 to lead 11-6 at the break.

Buoyed by some big saves from first-year goalkeeper Clare Boone -- who played the final 36:48 and made six stops -- the Bulldogs clawed their way back into the game early in the second half. Senior attacker Izzy Nixon, Yale's captain, scored twice during a 5-1 run that got Yale within 13-11 with 16:16 to play.

Nixon got the ensuing draw control -- one of 10 draws on the day for her -- and Yale had two shots to get within one. The first, a free position attempt, went wide, and the second was denied by a big save from Cornell goalkeeper Katie McGahan. The Big Red cleared the ball and scored, starting a 5-1 run to close out the game.

In addition to Nixon's 10 draws, Yale also got five from sophomore midfielder Olivia Markert. Markert had one goal, while Penoyer (4-1-5), Higgins (3-0-3), senior attacker Addie Zinsner (1-2-3), Nixon (2-0-2), first-year midfielder Jill Gollob (1-1-2)  and first-year midfielder Payton Vaughn (0-2-2) all had multiple-point outings.

Yale hosts UConn Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
