Blair Belling Named 2010 Captain

Belling Looks Forward to Challenge of Title Defense

NEW HAVEN, Conn.- Junior Blair Belling was recently elected the captain of the 2010 Yale women’s sailing team. She will lead the team as they attempt to win back-to-back National Championships this spring.

Belling is from Newport Beach, Calif. In 2007, as the captain of the sailing team she led Newport Harbor High School to the win at the National Doublehanded High School Sailing Championship and second place at the Baker Trophy Team Race Nationals.

Since coming to Yale, Belling has been an integral part of the team. For the past two seasons she has sailed with Thomas Barrows, helping the coed team to a fourth-place finish at Team Race Nationals and a second-place finish at Fleet Racing Nationals last May in San Francisco, Calif.

Having been an important part of the team both on the water and off as a recruiter her sophomore year and historian this past season, Belling is looking forward to this new challenge.

“I am very excited to be the women’s captain,” said Belling. “I'm honored to be elected by the team and I hope that I'll be able to keep up the excellent work Marla [Menninger] did as the former women's captain.”

McNay Family Director of Yale Sailing Zachary Leonard ’89 is also looking forward to Belling’s transition.

“I'm really excited to be working with Blair as the new Women's team captain,” said Leonard. “She's been a huge part of our team for three years and her commitment has been amazing.”

Even though the temperatures remain below freezing, the preparation for the spring season has already begun as the first coed event is mere weeks away.

“I am really excited for the spring season to begin,” said Belling. “Both the women’s and coed teams had such strong performances this fall and have been gearing up for the season, which will kick off right before spring break. I think we have the potential to win another national championship this May, and I cannot wait to get back on the water so we can work towards that goal.”

The women will begin their road to Wisconsin in March at the Charleston Women’s Intersectional in Charleston, S.C.
