NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 1 Bulldog women's sailing team won the Women's New England Championship regatta over the weekend. The win of the most competitive regional championship in the country confirms the Bulldogs' ranking as the best women's collegiate sailing team in the nation. This finish qualifies the team for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Women's National Championship regatta to be held on San Francisco Bay May 25-27.

The regatta was hosted by Dartmouth and the University of Vermont on Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vt. Justin Assad, the head coach of the University of Vermont sailing team reported high-level and extremely competitive racing.

"As to be expected, racing was generally excellent among the NEISA Women, and the level of competition was very high. The afternoon proved to be a nail-biter with many lead changes and some 11 or 12 teams fighting for a trip to San Francisco."

A Division completed seven races and B Division completed six races on Saturday in a warm 14-16 knot dying southerly and 1-3 foot waves. At the end of racing on Saturday Yale was in first place in both divisions with a 17 point lead overall.

A Division completed 4 races while B Division completed 5 races on Sunday to make a 22-race regatta. Sunday began with breezy, chilly conditions with 12-15 knots early, but the breeze died to two to six knots for much of the afternoon. While the regatta leader changed throughout the day, Yale ended on top with a combined three point lead over No. 4 Harvard. No. 9 Connecticut College took third. The top eight finishers qualified for nationals, including Yale, Harvard, Connecticut College, University of Rhode Island, Boston College, Dartmouth, Boston University and Brown University.

Despite the shifty and unpredictable breeze the B Division duo of senior Kate Hagemann and sophomore Elizabeth Brim demonstrated remarkable consistency to finish first in their division, one point ahead of the Dartmouth boat. A Division sailors senior Jane Macky and captain junior Marla Menninger won the day on Saturday but struggled on Sunday with one bad set to leave them in sixth in their division. The Bulldogs' next competition is at the ICSA Women's National Championship in San Francisco, Calif., on May 25-27.
