NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Four No. 3 Bulldog sailors will compete at the New England Singlehanded Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Laser Radials in Long Island Sound off the coast of New London, Conn. The sailors will be racing for the chance to represent Yale at the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championships on Oct. 24-26 at Cornell.
The Bulldogs have had past success at the event. In 2007, seniors Jane Macky and Kate Hagemann and junior Sarah Lihan competed for the Bulldogs. Macky won the event, followed by Sarah Lihan in sixth place and Kate Hagemann in 10th. 25 boats competed in 2007.
The Bulldogs should expect to be successful again at the event. Macky went on to take second at the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship in 2007. Lihan is also a very experienced Laser Radial sailor, having placed third at the United States Olympic Trials in the class in 2007. Hagemann is greatly improved since 2007 and earned All-American honors along with Macky at the conclusion of the spring 2008 season. Junior Rebecca Jackson will also make her debut in the Laser Radial at the event.
For Macky and Lihan, who primarily sailed the one-person Laser Radial prior to college, the event will be let them show off their experience. Singlehanded sailing only occurs a few times a year in college sailing, unlike the weekly competition in double handed sailing.
