No. 1 Bulldogs Compete at Singlehanded National Championships

Oct. 23, 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 1 Bulldog women's sailing team will compete at two regattas this weekend, including the women's singlehanded national championship. Senior Jane Macky will attempt to improve on her second-place finish at the ICSA/LaserPerformance Singlehanded National Championship hosted by Cornell. The Bulldogs will also compete at the Stu Nelson Trophy at Connecticut College.

Macky is a veteran competitor at sailing the Laser Radial at the Singlehanded National Championship and hopes that this experience will be advantageous again this year. She is the only competitor at the event who has qualified for four years running. As a freshman, Macky placed fifth. After placing eighth in 2006 as a sophomore, 2007 was Macky's best year yet; she placed second, only eight points from winning the title.

This year the competition will feature a tough new competitor, freshman Annie Haeger from Boston College. Haeger has either won or placed second at every intersectional in the Laser Radial class and won the New England Women's Singlehanded Championship by 31 points. Still, Macky is a very experienced competitor and has performed strongly this season in both single and doublehanded boats. Competition will begin on Friday and continue through Sunday.

The Bulldogs will also compete at the Stu Nelson Trophy hosted by Connecticut College on Saturday and Sunday. The Bulldogs sailed impressively at the event in 2007, placing second. The Bulldogs missed out on winning by five points. The Stu Nelson is hosted in FJs on the Thames River, a historically shifty venue with current.
