REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:

Saturday. The competitors meeting commenced with a moment of silence to remember PJ Wenner from the University of Hawaii. Racing started at 10AM on the Potomac River with South winds around 12mph with gusts over 20. Conditions were ideal and four A races and 3 B races were run by 1:30PM. Hearing reports of a squall line approaching the race committee sent B division in and waited for the squall to pass. After the squall linecame through the wind died and racing was called for the day. One protest was filed which was disallowed. Thanks to Andrew Campbell and Jackie Schmitz for hearing the protest. Tomorrow's forecast calls for a very strong west wind which means small courses and shifty winds in the Washington Sailing Marina lagoon.

Sunday - Windy and Shifty. Races were held in the Washington Sailing Marina Lagoon. The wind started out in the low teens and quickly built to the low 20's with gusts over 30. Numerous capsizes in B division and a lot of blown out jib windows. The races were very short and the wind shifted between WSW and NW which made the racing very tricky. The wind died as the day progressed but that only made the racing harder as the lulls were 4mph and the puffs were in the upper teens. Three protests were filed two were disallowed and the third resulted in a DSQ. Many thanks to John Camera, Berry Kurland and Kyle Bergeron for hearing protests. Thanks to Ian Burman (Navy) and Mike Buckley (Conn) for helping with run the crash boat. Thanks also to the Georgetown undergrads who did a great job running races and fixing boats in very difficult conditions. In particular Amanda Hassler for scoring, Michael Campbell for Race Committee and Nik Holtan for crash boat.
