Becky Brown Scores Both Goals

Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The schedule said it was the season opener, but the Yale women's soccer team looked in mid-season form on Friday against Wagner. The Bulldogs outshot the Seahawks 27-1 and cruised to a 2-0 victory at Reese Stadium. Becky Brown scored both goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Adelaide Gay posted her first career shutout.

"I was most pleased with our effort and intensity," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "We created a lot of chances. There was a little bit of first-game jitters, so it was nice to come away with a victory."

The final score could have been more lopsided, but Yale had four shots clank off either the crossbar or the post.

Brown, though, got a fortunate bounce off the post to get the Bulldogs on the board at 29:22. She took a feed from Kate Macauley, dribbled down the far side and fired a shot that deflected off the far post and into the net.

Nearly three minutes later, Brown struck again. This time she was set up by Megan Ashforth. Brown raced down the near side and snuck a shot past Wagner goalkeeper Sam Schueschner from a difficult angle.

Yale had a couple of chances to increase the lead in the second half, but was thwarted by Schueschner, who stopped seven shots over the final 45 minutes. Her best save came when she dove to her left to snare a Miyuki Hino shot.

The Seahawks (0-2) didn't register their first shot until the 60th minute and it was easily handled by Gay.

"I thought we did a good job of not letting them get back in the game," Meredith said. "We talked at halftime of the importance of getting the next goal or keeping them from getting it. We really kept the game under control."

Meredith was able to use 20 different players in the game.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday when they host Hofstra. Kickoff at Reese Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.
