Kubiuk, Underwood Shine At 2010 US Youth Soccer National Championships
Kubiuk Receives Golden Ball In Under-19 Division
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale women's soccer was well represented at the 2010 US Youth Soccer National Championships over the weekend at the Overland Park Soccer Complex in Kansas. Mary Kubiuk, who will be a sophomore this fall, and incoming freshman Katie Underwood both played for teams that reached the title game in their respective age groups. Kubiuk was the recipient of the Golden Ball in the under-19 division after scoring a tournament most five goals.
Kubiuk's team, Eclipse Select 91/92 of Illinois, lost to Lonestars 91 Red of Texas on penalty kicks in the championship game. As a freshman at Yale last fall, Kubiuk tied for third on the team with two goals and was fifth in points with six. Both of her goals were game-winners in back-to-back games against Quinnipiac and Princeton. She was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week following those two performances.
Underwood played for Syosset Sting 92 of New York in the under-17 girls division. The team dropped a 1-0 decision to So Cal Blues Dodge in the title game. Underwood was an NSCAA East Region All-America selection as a senior at Briarcliff High School. She was named the 2008 and 2009 New York State Class B Player of the Year and was a two-time first team all-state selection.
Both Kubiuk and Underwood will be with the Bulldogs when they open the 2010 season on Sept. 3 against Penn State.
