Bulldogs Blank Princeton 2-0 In Ivy Opener

Yale Scores Twice In 36-Second Span Of Second Half

PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton, N.J., is becoming the Yale women's soccer team's home away from home. Yale got two goals in a 36-second span early in the second half to knock off Princeton 2-0 in the Ivy League opener for both teams.

It was the Bulldogs' fourth straight road victory in the series, and they improved to 2-0 in Roberts Stadium, which opened in 2008.

"It's a really nice stadium, and our kids really look forward to playing here," Yale head coach Rudy Meredith said in trying to explain the success.

It didn't hurt that it was Yale's first overnight road trip of the season. The team arrived in town on Friday night.

"The kids bonded the night before [the game]," Meredith said. "We are together the whole time. I know when we are going to eat, what we are going to eat."

After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs jumped in front when Kristen Forster took a pass from Enma Mullo, dribbled into the box and fired a shot past Princeton goalkeeper Claire Pinciaro at 56:01.

Thirty-six seconds later, Melissa Gavin scored on a shot from along the left side. Meredith Speck had the assist.

"It's so important to get that second goal," Meredith said. "It really put the pressure on Princeton."

Yale goalkeeper Adele Jackson-Gibson made sure the two goals were more than enough. She finished with six saves to post her fourth shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs' defense also did the job on Princeton's leading scorer, Jen Hoy. Hoy had six shots in the game but most were well contested.

"We tried to make her shoot with her left foot," Meredith said. "We did a good job of smothering her."

Both teams had six shots in the scoreless first half, but Yale had the best scoring opportunity. Late in the half, Speck fired a shot that banged off the crossbar.

The Bulldogs are off until next Saturday when they host Harvard at 4 p.m. on Alumni Day at Reese Stadium.
