Road Games With Hartford, Stony Brook Kick Off Season
Bulldogs Opening With Pair Of Games Against America East Opponents
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the first time since 2008, the Yale women's soccer team will open the season on the road. In fact, the Bulldogs play their first two games away from the friendly confines of Reese Stadium. Yale faces Hartford on Friday at 7 p.m. and then travels to Stony Brook for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.
The Bulldogs have high hopes for 2012. Only one starter from last year's team that won nine games graduated, and head coach Rudy Meredith has a talented freshman class. Two players who earned All-Ivy recognition a year ago are back. Melissa Gavin was the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and earned first team honors, while Meredith Speck was a first team selection as well. Those two, coupled with an experienced senior class, give the Bulldogs plenty of depth.
While Yale is playing its season opener, both Hartford and Stony Brook are in the second week of their seasons. Hartford played a 1-1 tie with Fairleigh Dickinson last Friday and then beat Old Dominion 3-2 on Sunday. Freshman Elise Galipo is off to a fine start to her career. She was named the America East Rookie of the Week after scoring one goal and adding two assists in the Hawks' two games last week.
One Galipo's main competitors for the award was probably Stony Brook freshman Priscilla Wiggins, who has two goals on the young season. By the time Yale visits on Sunday, the Seawolves will already have played five games. Stony Brook is at Army on Friday. Stony Brook opened the season with a 3-2 loss to Rhode Island but has gone 2-0-1 since.
Yale and Hartford are playing for the first time since 2005, a 1-0 Yale victory. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series with Stony Brook 6-2. The Seawolves took the last meeting, 2-1 in double overtime in 2009.
Yale at Hartford, Friday – 7 p.m.
Yale at Stony Brook, Sunday – 2 p.m.
