Ivy Opener Saturday Against Princeton

Bulldogs A Perfect 4-0 At Reese Stadium This Season

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale women's soccer team is coming off two of its most impressive defensive efforts of the season. The Bulldogs shut down a potent Central Connecticut offense in a 1-0 victory last Sunday and allowed Iona only five shots two days earlier in a 2-1 win.

Yale head coach Rudy Meredith hopes the confidence gained in those performances carries over to Saturday's Ivy League opener against Princeton because his defense may be facing its biggest challenge of the season. The Tigers feature one of the most dangerous players in the league in senior Jen Hoy, who already has nine goals on the season. Kickoff at Reese Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.

The Bulldogs (5-3) enter the Ivy opener playing their best soccer of the season, having won three in a row and outscoring their opponents 11-2. Eight different players have scored during the stretch, led by Kristen Forster, who was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on Monday after scoring three goals and adding three assists. Forster is second in the league with five goals and 13 points. Overall, 10 different players have goals on the season.

Princeton (3-3-1) is much more reliant on Hoy, who has nine of the team's 15 goals. Hoy had a hat trick in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over Lafayette, her second three-goal performance of the season. Her 27 career goals are the fourth most in school history. The Tigers have a number of other talented players as well. Midfielder Jessica Lee was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Sept. 10, and Lauren Lazo was an honorable mention All-Ivy selection last fall.

The Bulldogs are 4-0 in the friendly confines of Reese Stadium this season, but home field hasn't meant much in recent meetings between the teams. In fact, the visiting team has won five straight in the series. Last year in New Jersey, Forster and Melissa Gavin scored 36 seconds apart early in the second half to lift Yale to a 2-0 victory.
