Gavin Named Ivy League Player Of Week
Scored Two Goals, Added Two Assists In Two Games
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Melissa Gavin is off to a strong start for the Yale women's soccer team. She scored a pair of game-winning goals over the weekend as the Bulldogs won their first two games of the season for the first time since 2009. This morning, she was rewarded for her efforts by being named the season's first Ivy League Player of the Week.
Gavin shared the honor with Princeton's Tyler Lussi.
In Friday's opener against Stony Brook, Gavin scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half. Two days later in a 3-1 victory over UMass Lowell, her goal midway through the second half snapped a 1-1 tie. She also tallied a pair of assists.
Gavin, the 2011 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, had a hand in all four Yale goals in the two games.
This is her first career Player of the Week selection. She was named Rookie of the Week twice in 2011.
In addition, freshman Geny Decker was named to the Honor Roll. Decker scored twice in the victory over UMass Lowell.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Friday at Georgetown at 3 p.m. They then play at Towson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
