Two Second-Half Goals Lead Washington Past Yale
Sept. 14, 2007
PORTLAND, Ore - Shuree Hyatt scored two goals in the second half, including the game-winner in the 61st minute, as Washington edged Yale 2-1 in the first game of the Nike Portland Invitational. Becky Brown's goal at 37:05 had given the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Yale (1-3) outshot the Huskies 17-10, but Taylor Carr made five saves in goal for UW (1-4).
"It was a good game," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "We had two mental lapses which led to their goals, but give Washington credit. They played very hard."
The Bulldogs controlled play in the first half and had an 8-3 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes. It wasn't until the 38th minute, though, that Yale got on the board. Brown took a feed from Maggie Westfal and fired a shot into the lower left corner from 12 yards out. It was Brown's team-leading second goal of the season.
Leslie Perez had a couple of chances early in the first half, but was thwarted by Carr each time.
The Huskies tied it just 45 seconds into the second half when Hyatt scored on a shot from eight yards out. Hyatt's game-winning goal was set up by Nikki Murray.
Yale takes on fourth-ranked Portland on Sunday at 4 p.m. EDT. Washington will play Kansas.
