Ivy Openers Go To Cornell

Yale Outhits Big Red In Both Games

Game 2 Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. – Nobody on the Yale softball team will shed a tear when Cornell pitcher Elizabeth Dalrymple graduates in May. Dalrymple continued her mastery of the Bulldogs, along with the rest of the Ivy League, by tossing a four-hit shutout to lead the Big Red to a 3-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Cornell won the second game 10-2.

The Bulldogs (6-12. 0-2 Ivy) outhit Cornell in both games.

In the first game, Dalrymple limited the Bulldogs to four hits – a double by Christy Nelson and singles to Jennifer Ong, Katie Yanagisawa and McKynlee Westman.

Yale's Chelsey Dunham was almost as sharp. She allowed only three hits, but unfortunately two went for extra bases. Morgan Cawley tripled home the Big Red's first run in the second and then scored on a passed ball. Christina Villalon doubled home a run in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Dunham struck out three and only two of the runs she allowed were earned.

Dalrymple, a two-time Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, struck out 11 and did not issue a walk.

Dalrymple set down the first nine batters she faced. Ong spoiled the no-hit bid when she singled leading off the fourth. Dalrymple, though, answered that hit by striking out the next three hitters.

The Bulldogs banged out nine hits in the second game but left eight runners on base. Meg Johnson was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, and Chelsey Locarno was 2-for-3.

The Big Red (13-11-1, 2-0 Ivy) scored twice in the first inning and four times in the second to seize control.

Yale got on the board in the top of the second. Johnson singled, and Nelson followed with a double. After Westman walked to load the bases, Tori Balta drove home Johnson with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

The Bulldogs also scored in the fifth. Virginia Waldrop singled but was erased on a fielder's choice. Singles by Yanagisawa and Mariclaire Rebman loaded the bases, and Johnson knocked in the run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Yale plays a doubleheader at Princeton on Sunday. The first pitch of the first game is slated for 12:30 p.m.
