  • Spring Academic All-Ivy Announced

    Spring Academic All-Ivy Announced The Ivy League has released its list of student-athletes selected for 2011-12 Academic All-Ivy honors in its spring sports, and 10 Yale student athletes were recognized. The 10 men and women were starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages. Each Ivy institution nominated five men and women from its eligible student-athletes.

    Ong Earns First Team All-Northeast Region Honors Jennifer Ong, who led the Yale softball team with a .351 batting average and 54 hits, has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Northeast Region first team.

    Ong Named First Team All-Ivy; Three Other Bulldogs Honored There weren’t too many more consistent players in the Ivy League this year than Yale’s Jennifer Ong. Ong, who led the Bulldogs in batting (.351) and hits (54), had at least one hit in all but eight games this spring and never went more than two games in a row without a hit. On Thursday, she was rewarded for her outstanding season by earning first-team All-Ivy recognition at second base.

    Nelson Re-Elected Yale Captain The leader of the Yale softball team will remain the same. Christy Nelson, who hit a team-best four home runs this spring, has been re-elected captain. The announcement was made following a team vote at Sunday’s postseason banquet. Nelson becomes only the fifth two-year captain in Yale softball history and the first since Kristen Gengaro in 1999 and 2000.

    Senior Day Sweep; Bulldogs Take Two From Brown In Season Finales It was Senior Day on Saturday at Dewitt Family Field, and the three Yale seniors playing their last games sure made the most of it. Meg Johnson went 4-for-4 with an RBI in the first game, Chelsea Janes had four hits and knocked in two runs and Virginia Waldrop made a pair of terrific catches in right field as the Bulldogs closed out the season by sweeping a doubleheader from Brown, winning the first game 8-1 and the second game 1-0.

    Ong Extends Hitting Streak To 12 In Losses At Brown Jennifer Ong extended her hitting streak to a season-long 12 games, but the Yale softball team dropped an Ivy League doubleheader at Brown. Kate Strobel hit a two-run homer to help the Bears to a 10-1 victory in the first game, and Trista Chavez was 2-for-4 and knocked in five runs in Brown’s 8-2 win the second game.

The teams play a doubleheader in Providence on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. and then meet at Dewitt Family Field on Senior Day on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.

    Onorato Belts First Career Homer In Doubleheader Loss To Army As expected, the Yale softball team saw plenty of pitcher Morgan Lashley in Wednesday’s doubleheader with Army. Lashley throws just about every game for the Black Knights and entered the day with 27 wins, which ties for the most in all of Division I softball. The Bulldogs got 20 hits off Lashley, but unfortunately it didn’t turn out to be quite enough.

    Nelson Homers Again In Doubleheader Loss To Dartmouth Christy Nelson continues to inch closer to Yale’s career home run record. Nelson homered for the second straight day but the Bulldogs still dropped a doubleheader at Dartmouth. Nelson’s 13th career home run was a two-run blast in the second game, an 8-4 Dartmouth victory. Only a junior, Nelson is four shy of the all-time Yale mark. The Big Green won the first game 8-0.

    Balta, Nelson Homer In Doubleheader Sweep Of Dartmouth The long ball hasn’t been a big part of the Yale offense so far in 2012. That changed in a big way in Saturday’s doubleheader with Dartmouth. Tori Balta belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lift the Bulldogs to a 3-2 victory over the Big Green in the first game, and Christy Nelson hit a solo home run in the second game as Yale completed the sweep with a 5-4 win.

    Bulldogs Head North For Four-Game Series At Dartmouth The Yale softball team played the first two games at Pioneer Park, Sacred Heart’s newly renovated stadium, on Wednesday. This weekend, the Bulldogs will get a look at another new stadium when they play a four-game series at Dartmouth. The Dartmouth Softball Park opened on Apr. 6, and Yale will play doubleheaders there on Saturday and Sunday. The start time on Saturday has been moved to 11:30 a.m., while Sunday’s twinbill is still set to begin at 12:30 p.m.

    Dunham’s Gem Earns Yale A Split At Sacred Heart With Yale and Sacred Heart combining for 11 runs and 16 hits, including three home runs, in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, it looked like newly renovated Pioneer Park might be extremely hitter friendly. Chelsey Dunham, though, showed in the second game it’s a little early to jump to that conclusion. Dunham tossed a three-hitter as Yale earned a split with a 3-0 victory. The Pioneers won the first game 7-4.

    Reinalda Inducted Into Cerritos College Hall Of Fame It made for a busy two days, but Yale softball coach Barbara Reinalda received a special honor last Thursday. Reinalda was inducted into the Cerritos College campus-wide Hall of Fame as part of the college’s inaugural Hall of Fame class. She flew out to California on Thursday morning, was honored at the ceremony that night and was back on a plane Friday to return in time for Yale’s weekend series with Harvard.

    Johnson Moves Into Eighth-Place On Yale’s Career Hits List In Bulldogs Doubleheader Loss To Harvard Senior Meg Johnson has been one of Yale’s most consistent hitters since the day she arrived in New Haven. In Sunday’s second game with Harvard she tallied the 153th hit of her career, which is eighth all-time at Yale. Unfortunately, that was about the only good news for the Bulldogs, who dropped a doubleheader to the Crimson. Harvard won the opener 15-1 and took the second game 9-2.

    First-Place Harvard Sweeps Yale Harvard’s vaunted pitching staff has received much of the attention so far this season. The Crimson, though, also feature a pretty potent offense, and that was on display on Saturday at Dewitt Family Field. The result was a difficult day for Yale. Harvard banged out 30 hits and swept a doubleheader from the Bulldogs, winning the opener 14-1 and taking the second game 11-2.

The Bulldogs have scored 14 runs in their last four games while batting .284 during the stretch. The Yale bats will get a stiff test this weekend when Ivy League North Division leader Harvard visits Dewitt Family Field for a four-game series. The teams play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday and both begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday is Alumni Day.

The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning of Wednesday’s second game against Wagner. Instead, the Seahawks’ pitching staff shut down Yale the rest of the way and Wagner went on to complete a doubleheader sweep with a 6-3 victory on a cloudy and chilly day at Dewitt Family Field. The Seahawks won the first game 6-0.

Yale matched the Big Red hit for hit in Saturday’s doubleheader, but the difference was the long ball. Cornell belted four home runs and swept the Bulldogs, winning the first game 8-6 and taking the nightcap 8-5.

    Bulldogs Bang Out 11 Hits In Opener But Drop Doubleheader At URI With a brisk wind blowing in from centerfield, the conditions at the URI Softball Complex on Wednesday didn’t seem conducive to a big offensive day. Still, Yale managed 11 hits in the first game, but unfortunately for the Bulldogs it wasn’t enough. Rhode Island was a bit more economical, scoring five runs on nine hits en route to a 5-3 victory. The Rams completed the sweep with a 7-0 win in the second game.

She allowed six hits and only one earned run in six innings. Unfortunately for Dunham, she was matched up with one of the hottest pitchers in the Ivy League. Alexis Borden tossed a three-hitter to lead the Quakers to a 1-0 victory at Penn Park.

Fairfield went on to win the second game 6-2.

This time, the Bulldogs were rewarded for their efforts. Christy Nelson and Virginia Waldrop knocked in runs in the eighth innings as Yale rallied for a 9-8 victory over Bryant. Bryant had won the first game 12-0.

Friday, on the other hand, is expected to be partly sunny with temperatures in the low 70s, certainly much better weather for softball. As a result, the doubleheader with Providence, originally scheduled for Sunday, has been moved up two days to Friday at 2 p.m. at Dewitt Family Field. The Bulldogs will still play Bryant on Saturday at 1 p.m.

    Brennan’s Double Lifts Bulldogs To Walkoff Win Over Marist In Opener; Red Foxes Win Second Game 5-2 The Yale softball team didn’t have a ton of offense in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader with Marist, but the Bulldogs sure made the most of their opportunities. Freshman Hannah Brennan’s double that fell just inside the right-field foul line scored Meg Johnson with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Yale won the opener 3-2.
