NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The forecast for Sunday in New Haven calls for a 60 percent chance of rain with a high temperature of 49. Friday, on the other hand, is expected to be partly sunny with temperatures in the low 70s, certainly much better weather for softball. As a result, the doubleheader with Providence, originally scheduled for Sunday, has been moved up two days to Friday at 2 p.m. at Dewitt Family Field. The Bulldogs will still play Bryant on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Yale (5-7) is coming off a pair of extra inning games with Marist on Wednesday. Hannah Brennan's double drove home Meg Johnson with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Bulldogs won the opener 3-2. The Red Foxes scored three times in the eighth inning of the second game to earn the split.
Johnson and Tori Balta had hits in each game. Johnson extended her hitting streak to five, while Balta has at least one hit in four straight games.
Providence brings a 5-16 overall record to New Haven. The Friars haven't played since dropping a 3-2 decision to Kent State last Sunday in Tampa, Fla. Jessie Bryant (.352) leads the team in batting. Alicia Grosso (5.48 ERA) has started 12 games in the circle. She has 41 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched.
Providence swept a doubleheader from the Bulldogs last year in Rhode Island, winning both games in walk-off fashion.
Bryant (4-13) has already played twice this week, a 6-4 loss to UConn on Tuesday and a 13-3 loss to Boston University on Wednesday. Aubrey Mable leads the team with a .435 batting average. Bryant has a 7.27 team earned run average.
The two teams met last year in New Haven, and Bryant swept the doubleheader, winning 6-1 and 3-0.
