NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It certainly won't be an easy opening weekend for the Yale softball team. The Bulldogs are in Arizona for the Grand Canyon University Purple Classic, and the four opponents they face are all in their third weekend of play. Yale meets Boise State and North Dakota on Friday, Michigan State and Grand Canyon on Saturday and Michigan State again on Sunday.

NOTE: Because of weather in the Phoenix area, the start times for the games on Friday have been pushed back one hour. Yale now plays at noon and 5 p.m. EST.

Optimism is high as the Bulldogs are set to embark on the 2019 season. Yale returns four All-Ivy selections from a year ago – Sydney Grobman, Shelby Kennedy, Miranda Papes and Carlin Hagmaier. The top four hitters and top two pitchers from a year ago are back, and head Coach Jen Goodwin has a deep and experienced roster.

Boise State, North Dakota and Grand Canyon are all first-time opponents. Yale has played Michigan State twice, a 3-1 loss in 1995 in Tampa, Florida, and a 3-1 loss in 1996 in Sacramento, California. This is the first trip to Arizona for the Bulldogs.

SCOUTING THE FIELD

Boise State (6-2) brings a five-game winning streak to Arizona. The Broncos went undefeated at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament last weekend, including victories over Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State, who were both receiving votes in the national polls… North Dakota (2-6) has played in the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas and the Southern Alabama Jaguar Classic. The Fighting Hawks opened the season with a 2-1 win over then No. 25 Long Beach State… Michigan State (3-6) is coming off four losses in the ACC/Big Ten challenge last weekend in Atlanta. The Spartans fell twice to both Boston College and Georgia Tech… Grand Canyon (4-6) is hosting its second tournament of the season. The Lopes have wins over Charlotte, San Diego State (twice) and UC Santa Barbara.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Bulldogs compete in the Towson Invitational in Maryland on Mar 1-3.
