Edwards Homers But Bulldogs Drop Doubleheader At Stony Brook
March 18, 2009
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Katie Edwards moved one step closer to the Yale all-time home run record, but it wasn't enough to help the Bulldogs in a doubleheader with Stony Brook. The Seawolves hit four home runs en route to a pair of victories, 7-1 in the first game and 6-1 in the nightcap. Edwards belted her 16th career homer in Game 1, moving her within one of Shayna Filson's school mark.
Stony Brook (9-3) is the defending America East champion and appears poised to make a run at a second straight crown. Pitcher Alyssa Struzenberg dominated the Bulldogs in the opener, striking out eight in the first three innings. Her wildness, though, did give Yale a couple of scoring opportunities.
The Seawolves jumped on the board in the second on back-to-back doubles by Molly Kestranek and Jade Claire. Claire then belted a three-run homer in the third.
Edwards's homer in the fourth brought the Bulldogs within 4-1, but Stony Brook answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Yale (6-8) threatened in the seventh when Rebman and McKynlee Westman singled, but Struzenberg worked out of trouble. Struzenberg finished with 11 strikeouts in the game.
Yale had many more opportunities to score in the second game but left 10 runners on base. Megan Enyeart went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs.
The Seawolves scored once in the first and four times in the third to take command. Kestranek's two-run homer capped the scoring in the third.
Yale's best chance came in the fourth. Edwards led off with a walk and Enyeart followed with a single to left. Rebman then walked to load the bases, but Stony Brook starter Colleen Mathes retired the next three hitters.
Deanna DiBernardi pitched four innings for Yale, allowing only two earned runs and striking out four.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday when they play their home openers against Marist. The first pitch of the first game at Dewitt Family Field is slated for 12:30 p.m.
