POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Kristy Kwiatkowski had seven hits as the Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from Marist. Kwiatkowski was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the first game, a 7-0 Yale victory, and 3-for-3 with a run scored in the nightcap, a 4-1 win. Peggy Hunt pitched a five-hit shutout in the opener. She had three strikeouts and did not issue a walk. In the second game, Beth Pavlicek tossed a complete game. She allowed six hits and one earned run.
Yale jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first game when Pavlicek homered with two outs in the first. The Bulldogs added three runs in the fourth. Kwiatkowski drove home two with a double down the right field line. She was thrown out at third trying to stretch it to a triple, but freshman Niki Haab followed with her first career home run. Yale sealed the victory with three runs in the seventh. The big hit was a two-run single by freshman Jessica Meyer.
In the second game, Yale scored all four of its runs in the second inning. Meredith Parks knocked in the first run with a ground out, and Leah Kelley and Pavlicek added RBI singles later in the inning. Kelley, Pavlicek and Christina Guerland all had two hits for the Bulldogs.
"It's nice to get two wins," said Yale head coach Andy Van Etten. "Our bats came alive, and we got two very well-pitched games."
The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday when they play their home-openers against Manhattan. The first game begins at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on WYBC (1340 AM) in the New Haven area. The broadcast also is available on the internet at wybc.com.
