Pavlicek Blanks URI 1-0 To Complete Sweep
April 7, 2004
KINGSTON, R.I. -- Beth Pavlicek pitched a three-hit shutout as Yale edged Rhode Island 1-0 to complete a doubleheader sweep at the URI Softball Complex. Pavlicek struck out four and did not issue a walk in earning her fifth win of the season. She has now pitched 20 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Yale had a season-high 19 hits and won the first game 9-3. Leah Kelley went 4-for-5 with a run scored and Chelsea Kanyer was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. The Bulldogs (17-13) have won 11 of their last 12 games.
"Our pitchers did a great job keeping their hitters off balance in both games," Kelley said. "We hit the ball hard on the offensive end and were able to find a few holes."
Yale wasted little time getting on the board in the first game. Kelley led off the first inning with a single and scored on Christina Guerland's double. Guerland then scored on Kristy Kwiatkowski's ground out. The Bulldogs added two more runs in both the second and third. The big hit in the second was an RBI double by Britni Fabacher, while Emily Lederer doubled home a run in the third.
After Rhode Island pulled to within 6-3, Yale sealed the victory with a three-run sixth. Kwiatkowski knocked in the first run with a single, and freshman Niki Haab followed with a two-run single. Peggy Hunt pitched her sixth complete game of the season. She allowed seven hits and struck out three.
In the second game, Yale scored the only run of the game in the third. Fabacher led off with a single and advanced to second on Kelley's sacrifice bunt. Fabacher moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Guerland's ground out. The Rams (7-19) threatened in the bottom of the seventh. They had runners on first and second with one out, but Pavlicek retired Nicole Haywood and Alyssa Martino on ground outs.
The Bulldogs open Ivy League play on Friday when they host Cornell in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
