Bulldogs Split In Ivy Openers

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Peggy Hunt pitched a five-hit shutout as Yale blanked Cornell 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Dewitt Family Field. Hunt struck out five and earned her team-leading eighth win of the season. Leah Kelley and Chelsea Kanyer each had two hits for the Bulldogs. Cornell (21-9, 2-2 Ivy) won the second game 4-1. Whitney Smith went the distance on the mound for the Big Red and struck out six.
Yale scored both its runs in the first game in the first inning. Kelley led off with a double to left field and moved to second on Christina Guerland's sacrifice bunt. Beth Pavlicek followed with an RBI double down the left field and line, and she scored on Kanyer's single.
Cornell, which entered the game with a .289 batting average and 29 home runs, had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh inning. Hunt, though, retired Erin Murtha on a pop out to short and Erin Kizer on a ground out to short to end the game. It was Hunt's fourth shutout of the season. She now leads the Bulldogs with a 0.77 earned run average.
In the second game, Cornell took advantage of four Yale errors to score three unearned runs in the third inning. The Bulldogs pulled to within 3-1 in the bottom of the third when Kelley singled and later scored on Kanyer's single to left. The Big Red added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Lauren May. Beth Pavlicek pitched a complete game for Yale. She allowed one earned run and struck out eight.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they play a doubleheader against Columbia beginning at noon.
