NEW HAVEN, Conn. -For the first five innings of Saturday's second game with Dartmouth, Yale couldn't touch Big Green pitcher Hillary Barker. Then in the sixth inning, the Bulldogs' bats came alive in a big way. Twelve hitters came to plate and eight of them scored as Yale rallied from a 2-0 deficit to top Dartmouth 8-2 at Dewitt Family Field. Two-run triples by Megan Enyeart and Ashley Sloan highlighted the outburst. The Big Green won the first game 7-2. Katie Edwards had two hits for the Bulldogs.
Deanna DiBernardi was outstanding for Yale in the circle in the second game. She limited the Big Green's high-powered offense to only five hits and had two strikeouts.
Barker, meanwhile, was perfect through the first three innings. She didn't allow a base runner until hitting Sloan with a pitch leading off the fourth. Meg Johnson drew a walk two batters later, but both were left stranded.
Dartmouth (19-16, 10-4 Ivy) finally got to DiBernardi in the fifth when Christy Autin singled and Kirsten Costello followed with a two-run home run.
Barker entered the bottom of the sixth inning with a no-hitter, but Lauren Huddleston led off with a sharp single. A Dartmouth error put runners on first and second, and Katie Yanagisawa followed with a sacrifice bunt. Barker retired the next hitter for the second out, but the next seven Yale batters had hits. Enyeart started the onslaught with her two-run triple. Mariclaire Rebman followed with an RBI single, and Edwards tripled. Lexi Peacock, Chelsey Locarno and Huddleston each singled, and Sloan capped the rally with a two-run triple.
DiBernardi then retired the Big Green in order in the seventh to finish off her third complete game of the year.
In the first game, Dartmouth grabbed a 1-0 lead on Molly Khalil's RBI single in the first, but Yale answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Sloan reached on an error to start the inning and moved to second on Yanagisawa's sacrifice bunt. Johnson followed with a triple to left field, and then scored on Enyeart's single.
The Big Green tied it in the fifth on Khalil's RBI double. The Bulldogs (17-21, 6-8 Ivy) had a chance to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Edwards and McKynlee Westman reached to start the frame but were left stranded.
Dartmouth then scored five times in the sixth to snap the 2-2 tie. The big hit was Nikki Yee's three-run double. A terrific running catch by Sloan in centerfield prevented further damage.
Devin Lindsay went the distance in the circle for the Big Green and had four strikeouts.
Dartmouth outhit Yale 10-4.
The same two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon at Dewitt Family Field. Free audio of the second game is scheduled to be available from wybc.com starting at 2 p.m.
