Ivy Scrimmages This Weekend at Brady Squash Center
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale women's squash has only one day of training left before its debut match in the Ivy Scrimmages. The Brady Squash Center at the Payne Whitney Gym hosts the Ivy Scrimmages every year. In the first round Yale will play Cornell on Saturday, Nov. 8.
The Bulldogs will compete against Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Trinity, the top four teams last year, for the No. 1 position nationally in the upcoming 2009-2010 season. Last season the Yale women fell short of this goal, finishing fifth in the CSA Team Championships in February. After two months of captain's practice, followed by an intense pre-season training regimen, the Bulldogs hope their hard work will help them gain a competitive edge on the other teams.
The freshmen class includes Katie Ballaine from Brooklyn, N.Y., Carolyn Brown from Concord, Mass., and Katie Harrison from Greenwich, Conn. These three talented squash players will push the upperclassmen and add depth to the line-up. Returning players include captain Alia Aziz and fellow seniors Kaki Ettinger and Kaitlin Vinci. The junior class includes Logan Greer, Caroline Reigeluth and Sarah Toomey, all of whom are vying for the top positions on the ladder. The five sophomores - Aly Kerr, Cat Morris, Kelly Mulrow, Rhetta Nadas and Lexi van Arkel - are excited to compete again this season with the advantage of a year of college squash under their belts.
Head coach Dave Talbott, assistant coaches Pam Saunders and Gareth Webber and volunteer assistant coach Pan Anckermann have been working tirelessly with the athletes to perfect their technique and fitness in preparation for their upcoming matches.
Following the Ivy Scrimmages, the Yale women will play their season opener against Williams at home on Nov. 20. The Bulldogs expect that their hard work during pre-season will result in a successful start to the season.
