NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 5 Yale women's squash team was defeated by No. 1 Harvard 7-2 on Saturday in the semifinals of the Howe Cup at the Brady Squash Center.
Saturday's match played out much like the Bulldogs regular-season showdown with Harvard on Feb. 13, when the Crimson also bested the Bulldogs 7-2. In both matches, Yale's two wins came from Alia Aziz and Sarah Toomey at the No. 2 and 3 positions respectively.
Aziz defeated Harvard's Nirasha Gurgue in a hard-fought five-game match. After falling down 2-1, Aziz rallied to win both the fourth and fifth games 11-8. Toomey needed only three games to defeat June Tiong, winning 11-4, 11-7, 11-8.
Harvard controlled the remainder of the matches on the ladder. The Bulldogs dropped five matches 3-0 and two matches 3-1 to the undefeated Crimson squad.
The Bulldogs will play in the Howe Cup third-place game Sunday at 11:30 against No. 2 Trinity. The Bantams were upset 5-4 by No. 3 Penn in Saturday's second semifinal. Harvard and Penn will meet in the Howe Cup final, scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.
