NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 5 Yale Bulldogs fell to the second-seeded Trinity Bantams in the third-place game of the Howe Cup Sunday afternoon at the Brady Squash Center.

The Bulldogs closed out a relatively successful season on a sour note, falling short against the Bantams for the second time this season.  On Jan. 20, Trinity defeated Yale 5-4 in a heart-breaking loss for the Bulldogs.

On Sunday Yale was not as close, though the Bulldogs did hold an early lead.  After the first shift of play, Yale led 2-1 behind 3-1 wins from Katie Ballaine (No. 6) and Sarah Toomey (No. 3).  Trinity commanded the second shift, winning all three matches 3-0 to take a 4-2 lead overall.  In the third shift, No. 1 Logan Greer was able to grind out a five-game victory over Trinity's Pamela Hathaway, but it was too late, as the Bantams had already clinched the match, winning both the No. 4 and 7 matches.

Despite the loss, the season was successful for the Bulldogs.  The team finished fourth nationally and managed an upset of No. 4 Princeton in the opening round of Howe Cup play.  Yale could be even stronger next season, as this year's team was built on youth.  If the Bulldogs are able to replace captain Alia Aziz and fellow seniors Katherine Ettinger and Kaitlin Vinci, the 2010-11 squad could compete for both the Ivy League and national titles.

Individual Bulldogs will close out the 2010 season with the CSA Singles tournament beginning Mar. 5 at Trinity's Kellner Squash Center.
