No. 2 Yale Goes 2-0 Against No. 21 Colby, No. 10 Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Saturday, the Yale women's squash team improved to 3-0 with 9-0 sweeps against Colby and Williams.

No. 21 Colby was up first.  The Bulldogs ended up puling off an easy 9-0 victory against the lower-ranked White Mules.

In the match against No. 10 Williams, the Bulldogs dropped only three games en route to their 9-0 victory.  Senior captain Katie Ballaine played at No. 1, where she topped No. 67 Laura Henry (Ballaine is No. 28 in the rankings) 13-11, 11-8, 11-6.  Sophomore Shihui Mao, ranked No. 38, knocked off No. 50 Alli Rubin in the second spot 11-5, 11-5, 11-7.  Playing at No. 3, junior Gwen Tilghman played an epic first game against Ellie O'Neill, eventually triumphing 18-16.  After that battle the match stayed close, but Tilghman took the second game 11-9 and the third 11-5 to sweep her way to victory.

In the fourth spot was No. 40-ranked junior Lilly Fast, who topped No. 98 Alyssa Northrup.  Northrup got off to an early lead, taking the first game 11-8, but Fast bounced back to win the final three 11-5, 11-9, 12-10.  In the fifth spot sophomore Issey Norman-Ross topped Nicole Feshbach easily, winning 11-5, 11-6, 11-7.  Senior Katie Harrison was at No. 6, and came away with an 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7 victory in a hard-fought battle against Caroline Sawin. 

The younger subset of the Yale team got into the action in the Nos. 7-9 spots, beginning with sophomore Anna Harrison, playing against Hannah Kaemmer.  Harrison took the victory in four games, with only a hiccup in the third game interrupting her 11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7 march to a win.  At No. 8, another younger sibling in Annie Ballaine took on Mia Fry, winning by a dominant score of 11-3, 11-0, 11-4 in her first collegiate action.  At No. 9, fellow freshman Georgia Blatchford took an 11-4, 11-5, 12-10 win over Lily Grant to complete the Bulldog sweep.  Finally, playing at no. 10, junior Coco Siebert won 11-6, 13-11, 11-4 against Hailey Newbound.
