Seven Bulldogs Headed to CSA Individual Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Starting Friday, the Yale women's squash team will send seven players to participate in the College Squash Association Individual Championships.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs will be junior Millie Tomlinson, the nation's No. 2 player after falling in the championship at last year's individual championships.  Tomlinson won the tournament two years ago in her freshman season, but last year ran into a brick wall in the form of Harvard's Amanda Sobhy.  Sobhy is this year's No. 1 seed in the Ramsay Division, while Tomlinson is No. 2.  Tomlinson's first opponent will be Trinity's Sachika Balvani, who had a strong season for Trinity.  Balvani, though, played in the seventh spot, while Tomlinson is accustomed to taking on the opponent's best player.

Joining Tomlinson in the Ramsay Division are senior captain Katie Ballaine, sophomore Shihui Mao, and junior Gwen Tilghman.  Tilghman is the victim of an unfortunate draw, as she will have to face Sobhy in the first round.  Ballaine, playing on the same side of the bracket as Tilghman, will start the tournament with a match against Cornell's Danielle Letourneau, who plays at No. 1 for the Big Red.  Letourneau entered the season ranked No. 9, while Ballaine is No. 28.  Mao will go against Princeton's Nicole Bunyan, with the winner slated to play the winner of Tomlinson and Balvani's match.  Bunyan is Princeton's No. 3, and actually faced Mao during the regular season.  In that marathon match, the two traded games back and forth until the fifth game, in which Mao did just enough to pull away with a 12-10 victory.

In the Holleran Division, junior Lilly Fast will be joined by sophomore Issey Norman-Ross and freshman Anne Ballaine.  Fast and Norman-Ross both have first-round byes, while Ballaine will face Bates' Kelly Myriam.
