Bulldogs Beat Big Green, 6-3

Jan. 13, 2007

HANOVER, NH - The Bulldogs picked up a big 6-3 win against Dartmouth on Saturday to extend their winning streak to five matches and even their Ivy League record at 1-1. Playing without Catherine McLeod and Nicola Shiels, Yale nevertheless dominated at the top of the lineup, as the top-four seeded Bulldogs all won their matches.

Coming off a tough 3-0 loss to Toby Eyre of Williams on Friday, No. 1 Miranda Ranieri bounced back in a big way, coming back from two games down to defeat Ashley Malenchak 3-2 (4-9, 6-9, 9-6, 9-4, 9-0). No. 2 Lauren McCrery defeated Christie Alexander 3-1 (9-5, 9-1, 4-9, 9-2), No. 3 Alia Aziz downed Rebecca Loucks 3-0 (9-2, 9-4, 9-2), and No. 4 Kate Rapisarda thrashed Madeline Lurio 3-0 (9-4, 9-4, 9-7).

In an extremely hard-fought match, No. 5 Tara Wadhwa came back to tie Avery Eyre at two games after dropping the first two, but ultimately fell in a very close 3-2 match (9-4, 10-9, 6-9, 5-9, 9-6).

No. 6 Sarah Barenbaum and No. 8 Jessica Balderston picked up the other two wins for Yale. Barenbaum defeated Emilie Mackie 3-1 (9-6, 2-9, 9-6, 9-3) and Balderston got by Heather Lisle 3-2 (4-9, 9-4, 3-9, 9-6, 9-1).

The much-improved Big Green certainly proved to be formidable opponents for Yale, indicated Associate Head Coach Gareth Webber.

"They've improved and were really fired up, but our players came through with good, close, hard-fought wins," he said.

The tight match was good for the Yale squad in its preparation for upcoming matches with Cornell and Trinity, he said.

"[Head Coach Dave Talbott and I] were both actually sweating at one point. I think it was good for the team to be involved in a good, tight match like that."

Yale will continue its road trip next Saturday, when they take on Cornell and William Smith in New York.
