Bulldogs Down Dartmouth, 9-0, In First Round Of Howe Cup

Feb. 22, 2008

PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 3-seeded Bulldogs easily handled No. 6 Dartmouth on the first day of the Howe Cup in Princeton, N.J., winning by the score of 9-0. In a dominant performance, Yale swept an opponent for the first time in over a month.

No. 5 Caroline Reigeluth had the match of the day for the Bulldogs. After dropping the first game to Hannah Conant, 9-2, Reigeluth ripped off two straight 9-7 wins before losing the fourth game, 9-5. A solid 9-4 win in the fifth clinched the match for the freshman.

The bottom of the Yale lineup came to play as well, winning by a combined score of 12-0. No. 6 Jessica Balderston beat Elizabeth Brown, 3-0 (9-2, 9-4, 9-0), No. 7 Sarah Barenbaum downed Taylor Tully, 3-0 (9-2, 9-4, 9-0), No. 8 Tara Wadhwa defeated Maura Doherty, 3-0 (9-0, 9-6, 9-1), and No. 9 Elisabeth Hill easily handled Danielle Fushetti, 3-0 (9-0, 9-1, 9-0).

This was the second win over the Big Green on the season for the Bulldogs, as they also beat Dartmouth 8-1 on Jan. 19 in New Haven.

The Bulldogs will get a rematch with Princeton, who beat Brown 9-0 today, tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the semifinals. Yale dropped a 6-3 decision to the Tigers on Feb. 2 in an epic, tightly fought contest that featured two five-game heartbreakers for the Bulldogs. With Princeton dropping a 5-4 decision to Trinity in its last regular-season match, Yale certainly figures to have more than a puncher's chance against the country's No. 2 team.
